How to Check Your CAO Application Status – All Methods
Track Your Application Progress
After submitting your CAO application, the waiting period can be stressful. Knowing how to check your application status and understanding what each status means is crucial. This comprehensive guide covers every method for checking your CAO application status, when to check, and what to do based on what you find.
Methods to Check Your CAO Status
1. CAO Online Portal (Recommended)
The most reliable and up-to-date method is through the CAO website at www.cao.ac.za. Log in with your CAO number (starting with 26-) and the password you created during application. Navigate to "Check Application Status" or "My Application" to see the current status for each of your programme choices. The online portal is updated in real-time when universities process your application, making it the most current source of information.
2. SMS Service
CAO provides an SMS service for status updates. SMS your CAO number to the designated number (published on the CAO website). You will receive a reply with your current status. Standard SMS rates apply, and the service may experience delays during peak periods (December-February). This method gives less detail than the online portal.
3. Email Notifications
CAO sends email notifications for significant status changes – acceptance, rejection, or waitlist notifications. Ensure the email address on your application is correct and active. Check your spam and junk folders regularly, as automated emails sometimes get filtered. If you need to update your email address, log into the CAO portal or contact them directly.
4. Direct University Contact
For detailed information about your application at a specific university, you can contact their admissions office directly:
| University | Contact Method | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| UKZN | admissions@ukzn.ac.za | Specific programme queries |
| DUT | enquiries@dut.ac.za | Residence and registration info |
| MUT | info@mut.ac.za | Application progress |
| UNIZULU | admissions@unizulu.ac.za | Faculty-specific queries |
When to Check Your Status
Key Dates in the CAO Timeline
Understanding the timeline helps manage expectations. After submitting your application (March-October), your application enters processing. CAO verifies your documents and forwards your application to universities. You should receive an acknowledgement within 2-4 weeks. During the evaluation period (November-January), universities review applications against their entrance criteria, including your APS score and subject requirements. First offers typically go out from mid-November for early applicants.
After matric results release (typically mid-January), universities process final applications using actual results. Most offers and rejections are communicated in January and February. Late offers and waitlist movements continue into March and even later.
How Often Should You Check?
There is no need to check daily during the early processing phase (March-October). During the active offer period (November-February), checking weekly is reasonable. When you receive communication about a status change, check immediately and respond within deadlines. Remember that obsessively checking will not speed up the process.
Understanding Your Status
When you check your status, you will see codes or descriptions. Our CAO status meanings page explains each one in detail. The most common statuses include:
- Application Received: CAO has your application but it has not been forwarded to universities yet.
- Under Consideration: Universities are reviewing your application.
- Conditionally Accepted: You have been provisionally accepted pending final matric results.
- Accepted: Congratulations! You have a firm offer.
- Waitlisted: You meet requirements but no space is currently available.
- Unsuccessful: You were not accepted for this programme. See what to do next.
Troubleshooting Common Problems
Cannot Log In to the Portal
If you have forgotten your password, use the "Forgot Password" function on the CAO website. If your CAO number is not recognised, contact CAO directly with your ID number and application details. Ensure you are using the correct year's portal (2026 applications use the 2026 portal).
Status Has Not Changed in Weeks
During certain periods, this is normal. Universities process thousands of applications and prioritise certain programmes. If your status has not changed for more than 6 weeks during the active period (November-February), contact CAO to confirm your application was forwarded to the relevant university.
Different Status for Different Choices
Each of your six programme choices is processed independently. It is normal to have different statuses for different choices – for example, accepted at one university while still under consideration at another.
What To Do After Checking
- If accepted: Accept the offer within the given deadline. Apply for accommodation. Confirm your NSFAS or bursary status.
- If waitlisted: Be patient but prepare alternatives. Read about how waitlists work.
- If unsuccessful: Do not panic. Read our guide on next steps and consider a gap year or alternative pathways.
